Work as Worship

The English word “worship” comes from the older English worth-ship. It means to see God is all worthy. The creatures worshiping Jesus in heaven describe God’s worth when they say “Worthy is the Lamb who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing!” (Rev. 5:12).

We not only describe Jesus’ worth in worship but when we give God what he is worth. Paul depicts Christ’s worth when he says, “Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ” (Philippians 3:8).

The question we must ask ourselves, “What is God worth to us?” The biblical answer is that God is worth everything because he has given us everything. Paul in the book of Colossians says “And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together” (1:17). Everything we have is from and for him; therefore, everything we do should be done for him because he is worthy. Later in the book of Colossians Paul concludes Jesus’ worth in our work when he says “Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men” (3:23).

Therefore, whether you are a house help, plumber, electrician, engineer or driver, we can and should worship through our work. Work is worship when we choose to use what he has given us to show he is worthy. This is a great calling and opportunity. May we be faithful in showing his worth in all things
